Routine

What to Bring

  1. A nutritious lunch of a carbohydrate, fruit and/or vegetable, protein, and juice, milk, or water. All foods should be ready to eat and the lunch kit should be labeled with your child’s name near the handle.
  2. A snack (a few Goldfish™ crackers, fruit ready to eat, or cheese plus a small box drink) packed in a brown paper bag with your child’s name on it (ex: Mary’s snack).
  3. One complete change of clothing, labeled.
  4. A favorite blanket or stuffed animal for naptime, labeled.
  5. Disposable diapers for the babies, labeled.
  6. Plastic milk bottles for the babies, labeled.

Glass containers and plastic utensils are not allowed. When packing your child’s lunch, please try to avoid items such as nuts, whole grapes, hot dogs, popcorn and some types of chips. All of these could cause your child to choke.

Be sure each item your child brings is clearly labeled with his/her name. All lunch kits should have the child’s name clearly marked on top near the handle so that it will be clearly visible to the teacher when all lunch kits are standing side by side. Please put your child’s name on all cups, tops to cups, thermos bottles, and thermos cups. We want to be able to identify all parts left on the table so that we will be able to place them in the correct lunch kit.

What Not To Bring

We ask that all toys be left at home. No jewelry, candy, gum or money is to be brought to school by the children. These items will be secured by the teacher and returned to the parent at the end of the day. There are a few exceptions:

  • Favorite toys that may be needed during the first days of school
  • Toys or books brought for Show and Tell

Please be sure these things are marked with the child’s name.

Clothing

Part of each day, weather permitting, is spent outdoors running, jumping, climbing, and balancing. Please dress your child in regular play clothes that can be washed. We do fun things at school, and sometimes it gets really messy. Play is your child’s business and it is important for him or her to feel free to participate with no worries. Tennis shoes or rubber sole shoes are the safest shoe to wear to school for maximum freedom of movement. No cowboy boots, please. Please dress your children in cool shorts and shirts in the spring and fall and very warm clothes in the winter. Also, please send an extra set of clothes and make sure everything is labeled.

Arrival

The school day starts at 9:00 a.m. If you arrive early, please stay with your child in the gymnasium until the teacher is ready. No child will be admitted before 9:00 a.m. because this is the time the teachers are preparing their classrooms for the day.

Picking Up Your Child

Children are to be released only to their parents or to people stated in writing on the child’s registration form. If someone new comes to pick up the child (and their name is on the registration form) but they have not met the staff, the staff is instructed to ask for identification. If someone new (whose name is not on the registration form) comes to pick up the child and we have not been notified in writing that they have permission, the child is not released. The following procedure shall be followed:

  1. Identification will be requested.
  2. The parents will be contacted on the phone.

No child will be released without the signed permission of the parents. The school hours are Monday-Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. A late charge of $5.00 will be assessed after 2:10 p.m. with an additional $5.00 for each 15 minutes thereafter.

Birthdays

We have a simple birthday celebration on or near each child’s birthday. On the day of the celebration, the child may bring a simple treat for the daily snack time. We will not pass out any chocolate or anything made with nuts or peanut butter because of allergies. Please let us know if you do not want your child to have a birthday treat. A simple sugar cookie is a great treat.

Discipline

Our staff works hard to create a loving and understanding environment in which your child can develop self-discipline and acceptable behavior. When a child has an emotional outburst, we provide comfort and privacy. This allows the child to regain composure and ensures the safety of the other children. The “thinking chair” will be used when a child is unable to break a pattern of negative or attention-getting behavior. When the child has regained control, he/she should be allowed to join the group. In the case of a lack of improvement, the teacher will talk to the child’s mother to discuss with her the best way to reach her child and solve the problem.

Field Trips/Water Activities

There are no field trips or water activities planned for this school year.

Medications

Staff members are not allowed to give medications to the children. If your child needs a mid-morning dosage, please let us know that you will be coming to school to administer the medication. Also, if your child needs protection from the sun or insect bites, please put your choice of sunscreen and/or insect repellent on his/her arms and legs before your child leaves home. We are not allowed to use insect repellents on the playground or on the children because of allergic reactions.

Rest Time

All children in the program participate in a time of rest or sleeping in the early afternoon. Each child will have a cot and will be expected to remain quietly on it during the rest time. Restful music is played during this time and a teacher will gently rub their heads to help them go to sleep. It is our policy that if a child falls asleep their body requires that rest. Therefore, we will make no efforts to keep a child awake during this time.
